Lethe stared at her river once again deep in contemplation, really there was no much else to do while she kept watch over these waters as few ever came to seek their comfort now that the planets of Lethe and Mnemosyne were gone. Nor were her spiritual powers as strong as her sister’s, making her ability to sense trouble from the Galaxy Cauldron as dead as a human’s nose with compared with a dog’s or their eyes with those of a butterfly. (Of course, she wasn’t terribly fond of butterflies… No, that was unfair, she had nothing against the species as a whole, just one butterfly in particular.) And the girls had lived long lives full of violence and turmoil, so she had much to think about.
At that moment she was thinking about her sister. Lethe did not think that it was her imagination that Mnemosyne had been looking worried and distracted lately. It made her sad to think that her twin would not tell her if something was bothering her. Lethe wondered if Galaxia had told her about their talk the other day and how she had taken Mnemosyne for granted. If that was the case, it could not be forgiven. But in some ways, it didn’t not matter what had caused Mnemosyne pain, so long as she could do something to alleviate it. She missed their carefree days of childhood when they had been Lethe-chan and Mne-chan and it had been so easy to put a smile on Mne’s face. Now her smiles were harder to come by and far too often laced with sadness. Lethe wished for what must have been the millionth time to be able to return that blissful ignorance to her sister. What she wouldn’t give… But such thoughts were pointless. They did nothing. She sighed.
As if on cue, she heard that sigh echoed and she turned to see who it was. She gave a wistful smile on seeing her sister’s face. But it was hard to keep smiling when she heard the words out of her sister’s mouth. So Galaxia was the one causing Mnemosyne so much pain… But she didn’t let her countenance change, she had to be strong for her sister. She would not let her own moods upset the precious girl in front of her. “I think she is just confused. Memories do not come suddenly or in order or in a way that makes sense, like oblivion. It’s a much more difficult process, especially when the memories are painful, and I think she feels that. She is not even sure that all of the dreams she’s having are memories and not just tricks her mind is playing on her. I don’t know that answer to that either. I think it will just take time for her to sort everything out.” She ran a hand across Mnemosyne’s face, tracing a line along her cheekbone with her caress. Her eyes were gentle and full of love as she looked at her little sister’s face, in a way they never were when she looked at anyone else. She was so lucky. This precious girl was her sister and she returned her love. Lethe would have done anything for her. “More importantly, sister, you haven’t been yourself lately. You seem sad, distracted. I think you’ve been spending too much time staring into your river and worrying about Galaxia. It’s not good for you, darling. Let me take you somewhere, I’d like to distract you. To make you smile…” She smiled a little wider at that. There was nothing in the world she liked more than to make Mnemosyne smile.
Mnemosyne gave another heavy sigh as Lethe talked about Galaxia and her memories. “I know it’s difficult. And I’m sure that with time she will understand it all. But I just feel useless for now.” With Lethe’s gentle touch Mnemosyne turned her face to her sister, her wide eyes shimmering lightly, her sadness and helplessness evident in the unshed tears. Mnemosyne knew she could trust Lethe with her feelings. Although Mnemosyne had needed some time to work out her concerns; she could open up with Lethe. She could let down her guard with her sister, because she would always protect her.
“It’s more than just the memories I’m worried about,” she started, unsure of how to describe it, “She’s just been strange. I don’t understand why she was more worried about the Galaxy Cauldron than usual. I haven’t sensed anything particularly unusual about it. I haven’t physically checked, but I don’t understand what has caused her concern for it.” Her hand caught the edge of her cloak and toyed with a loose strand in a nervous gesture before she continued, looking down, “I just… don’t understand her. I don’t understand what she wants. Her…somewhat lack of decorum confuses me. She uses her words so lightly and freely. She says one thing that I attempt to interpret, and then says another that completely debunks my theory. I just wish I understood… what she intends; what she wants me to be.” Although she fought it, Mnemosyne could help but think of the small things she had thought had indicated a proposal of friendship from Her Majesty. Yet she would still leave for long lengths of time without a second thought. Mnemosyne tried to remind herself that she was a mere servant of the Queen, but she still managed to misinterpret the Queen’s intentions.
Mnemosyne couldn’t help but stare at her sister as she proposed a distraction. It wasn’t as though they lived close to anything, nor did they have any more ties to other planets. As far as Mnemosyne could tell, they had nowhere else they could go. “You want us to… go away?” Mnemosyne asked, her brow furrowed in confusion, “Where could we possibly go?”
